Si tratta di una pianta cespugliosa perenne di colore verde scuro che forma cespugli alti fino a 1,5-2.0 m. Le foglie ed il fusto sono cilindrici e pungenti, caratteristica questa che ha dato il nome alla specie. L’infiorescenza è composta da fiori bruni o rossicci, di piccole dimensioni. Il frutto è una capsula trigona od ovale, di colore bruno rossastro. Il periodo di fioritura va da aprile a luglio.
Diffusa, oltre che in Sardegna, in tutta l’area Mediterranea, rinvenibile anche in Sudafrica, California e America del Sud.
È molto comune in Italia, ove predilige le zone umide delle regioni costiere; talvolta è presente anche a quote più elevate.
Il suo habitat ideale è rappresentato dalle zone umide ad alto tasso di salinità, da cui tuttavia può diffondersi anche alle aree circostanti.
The spiny rush (Juncus acutus), very widespread along the shores of the Protected Marine Park, is a plant of the Juncaceae family.
It is a perennial bushy plant of dark green color that forms bushes high up to 1.5-2.0 m. The leaves and the stem are cylindrical and pungent, characteristic that has given the name to the species. The inflorescence is composed of brown or reddish flowers, small in size. The fruit is a trigona or oval capsule, reddish brown in color. The flowering period is from April to July.
Widespread, as well as in Sardinia, throughout the Mediterranean area, also found in South Africa, California and South America.
It is very common in Italy, where it prefers the wetlands of the coastal regions; sometimes it is also present at higher altitudes.
Its ideal habitat is represented by wetlands with a high salinity rate, from which however it can also spread to the surrounding areas.
