È una specie elofita con base e gemme perennanti sommerse, ma con fusto e foglie aeree.Presenta un grosso rizoma perenne, con radici striscianti, ramificate in una fitta rete che contribuisce al consolidamento del suolo. I fusti sono eretti, di colore verde scuro, alti fino a 3 m. Hanno sezione cilindrica e sono ripieni di un midollo spugnoso. Le foglie sono brevi, lineari, a guaina. I fiori sono ermafroditi e si presentano riuniti in una infiorescenza a capolino terminale, costituita da piccole spighe rosso-brunastre. Fiorisce da giugno ad agosto. L’impollinazione è anemocora.
Ha una diffusione cosmopolita: è presente in Europa, Asia, Africa, America del Nord, America centrale e Polinesia. In Italia è comune, presente in tutta la penisola e nelle isole. Cresce sulle rive di fiumi, laghi e stagni, nelle paludi, sugli argini di canali e fossi.

It is a helophytic species with base and perennial buds submerged, but with stem and leaves aerial.Presenta a large perennial rhizome, with creeping roots, branched in a dense network that contributes to the consolidation of the soil. The stems are erect, dark green, up to 3 m tall. They have a cylindrical section and are filled with a spongy marrow. The leaves are short, linear, sheathed. The flowers are hermaphroditic and come together in a terminal peaked inflorescence, consisting of small red-brownish spikes. It blooms from June to August. Pollination is anemochor.
It has a cosmopolitan spread: it is present in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, Central America and Polynesia. In Italy it is common, present throughout the peninsula and on the islands. It grows on the banks of rivers, lakes and ponds, in the marshes, on the banks of canals and ditches.
