Si tratta di una specie arbustiva della famiglia delle Cupressaceae. Noto con i nomi comuni di ginepro fenicio, ginepro licio, cedro liscio è un elemento costitutivo della macchia mediterranea.
Il Ginepro fenicio è un arbusto o alberello sempreverde, con altezze che vanno dal metro ai 6 metri, può diventare secolare e di notevoli dimensioni ma a volte la sua forma è strisciante. La corteccia ha un colore rossastro e delle fessure poco profonde e allungate.
Si distingue per avere le foglie squamiformi strettamente aderenti ai rami laterali, che assumono perciò l’aspetto di corde. Per questa caratteristica potrebbe essere confuso con un cipresso, ma si differenzia per i frutti che non son legnosi, mentre lo sono nei cipressi.
