È una specie diffusa nelle acque dolci, salmastre e marine dell’Atlantico e del mar Mediterraneo e suoi tributari, dall’Islanda al Senegal. È meno comune nel mar Nero e nei suoi tributari (tra cui il Danubio). In genere popola ambienti a corrente debole o assente, ma non si può escludere di trovarla in acque anche molto mosse. I maschi stazionano spesso in acque salmastre, senza risalire i fiumi come invece fanno regolarmente le femmine.
Anguilla eel, known as eel or European eel, is a teleost fish from the Anguillidae family. In some Italian regions, the large female (up to a meter and a half long) is called a capitone, while the male, much smaller (40-60 cm), is called the buratello.
It is a widespread species in the fresh, brackish and marine waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and its tributaries, from Iceland to Senegal. It is less common in the Black Sea and its tributaries (including the Danube). It generally populates environments with weak or no current, but it can not be ruled out that it may be found in very rough waters. The males often stay in brackish waters, without going up the rivers as they regularly do the females.
