It has a slender and strong trunk, a long and slender neck. It has a length of about 60 cm and a wingspan of 110 cm. The beak, thin and curved towards the bottom, is about 18 cm long. The tail is composed of twelve feathers, and the legs have four fingers. Between February and March the curlew undergoes a partial moult, then changes a part of the feathers of the body and the tail. Equipped with highly refined senses, it is a suspicious bird. If he senses a danger, he gets up in the air and throws the characteristic cry that seems to say “chiurlì chiurlì”, which is called his vulgar name.
In the period of love the female curlew chooses a slightly elevated area and, found a natural hole, generally lays 4 eggs, similar to those of a duck and greenish-colored piriformes. The incubation lasts 26 to 28 days and the male often substitutes the female in the hatching.
