I primi rilevanti lavori di ingegneria mineraria risalgono alla seconda metà del XIX secolo, contemporaneamente alle miniere del Salto Gessa di Buggerru. Il villaggio minerario di Nebida iniziò allora a svilupparsi attorno a piazza, circolo dei lavoratori, infermeria, edifici amministrativi e chiesa. Il centro ospitava nel 1910 tremila persone, dei quali un terzo impiegati nella miniera, oggi conta circa cento abitanti, quasi un villaggio fantasma. Gli estesi cantieri di lavoro sono arrampicati sulla montagna.
